  2. Geiger counter. After studying in Germany, he
  3. spent the period 1907-12 in Manchester,
  4. England, working with Ernest Rutherford. In
  5. 1908 they designed an instrument to detect
  6. alpha particles, which was refined and made
  7. more powerful to produce the Geiger counter
  8. in the 1920s.
